Resources · Sample close

What lands at the end of the month.

Not a dashboard of suggestions - a finished close. This is everything in the package, and where each part comes from.

Everything in the package.

The financial statements are the ones QuickBooks or Xero produce for the period, rendered on your letterhead. Bursar does not derive a second set of numbers and show them beside your ledger’s - a close that disagrees with the client’s own file is not a close, it is an argument.

Profit & loss
The statement your ledger produces, rendered on your firm’s letterhead.
Balance sheet
The same - one source of truth, presented as your firm’s work product.
Reconciliations
Per account: book balance, statement balance, the variance between them, and any exception that is still open.
Coded transactions
Every row for the period with the account it was coded to, and which of them a human corrected.
Collected documents
Every statement and receipt gathered during the month, filed against the client and the period.
Open-items memo
One page. What is outstanding, what was parked, and what a person should decide before next month.
Open items

The open-items memo is the honest part.

Every close has loose ends. A product that hides them delivers a package that looks finished and is not. The memo names each one, says who it is waiting on, and says what happens next - which is what makes the rest of the package trustworthy.

  • Documents that never arrived, and who they were asked of
  • Reconciliation exceptions left open for a decision, stated as the rule that raised them rather than as invented effort
  • Items parked this cycle and queued to be re-asked next
  • What the reviewer noted when they signed

Onboarding closes a past month as a rehearsal, so the first package you read is one you can check.
